Workshop Weekend

It was all about cohousing, communication and consensus during a fantastic sun-filled 2-day 'Is Cohousing For You?' workshop with Margaret Critchlow in Sidney. We also had an Information Session (and welcomed new members), and a tour of Harbourside Cohousing in Sooke.… diving in and learning!

Cohousing Talk on Pender Island

We met a group of interesting (and interested!) Pender Island residents at Margaret Critchlow's cohousing talk March 12 at their lovely library. Thank you Therese, Ene, Sarah and Meg for a warm welcome and delicious Mediterranean lunch! Kitty Elton from West Wind Harbour cohousing in Sooke and Tracy Mills from Saanich Peninsula Cohousing joined Margaret to introduce two new cohousing projects underway on Vancouver Island and explain how to participate through Information Sessions and Workshops.

We had the opportunity to meet with some likeminded folks in Victoria recently at our first "Casual Cohousing Coffee Chat" (CCCC). Delightful! We're planning more in the upcoming months around the Peninsula, in addition to our information session April 23rd and Margaret Critchlow's workshop 'Is Cohousing For You?' May 27/28. Presenting to the Probus Club

Tracy Mills and Murray Weisenberger introduced Cohousing to the warm and welcoming Probus Club of Brentwood Bay on May 17. The hour was filled with lively discussion and lots of questions from 65 retired professional and business leaders in our community. We're thankful for the opportunity to share cohousing - and grateful for the Ray Franklin wooden vase that is destined for our future common house!

Getting Your Commuity Built Workshop

Getting a cohousing community built is a complex multi-step process. This workshop provided insight into the road ahead from organizational, legal, financial, development, and social perspectives. Ronaye and her team provided us with a wealth of knowledge and experience from which we all benefitted. Plus we had great fun at our pot-luck!

Ronaye Matthew and her team (CDC) bring their expertise and guidance to our group May 13/14, 2016 for our foundational 2-day workshop: Getting Your Community Built with Preliminary Site Review.

Ronaye has played a key role in most of the successfully completed cohousing projects in the lower mainland and on Vancouver Island - helping inform a group's choices along the cohousing path: forming, financing, organizing, site selection, feasibility, design, construction, facilitation, and move in.

Info Session at Brentwood Bay Village Empourium

Thank you for making our Info Session on April 5th at the Brentwood Bay Village Empourium delightful! Two hours flew by as we talked about cohousing and our initiative on the Saanich Peninsula (and enjoyed delicious coffee!). Our engaged community brought questions and fuelled a great discussion. What it Cohousing? (co-created housing that provides privacy and connection) How does it work? (people power) How can I get involved? (Join in)

Is Cohousing For You? Workshop Update

Cohousing, consensus, facilitation, meetings, agenda planning, vision, next steps - we talked and practiced it all! Margaret Critchlow (far left) embodied the 5-star presenter and 'servant-leader' skills needed for high-functioning cohousing groups. The forming groups on Vancouver Island and Salt Spring Island were represented, and attendees came from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario! Join in as we move the projects forward!

A Visit to Harbourside

Margaret Critchlow (4th from left) invited our group to Harbourside to see cohousing in action. Susan (far right) coordinated the visit (thank you!) and here are her thoughts on the day:

"We were warmly welcomed in Harbourside's Common House by Margaret and Jean, the resident visitor's guide. The view of the harbour being stunning, it took some minutes to pay attention to the efficiency of the kitchen area, the spaciousness of the seating area and the convenience of the amenities, including guest bedrooms and bathrooms and a library. After a brief overview of the layout of the grounds and the 5 choices of home sizes, we toured the bottom floor of the Common House where there is potential for future development.

We visited 3 of the owner's homes and toured the bike storage and locker room. I was amazed by the clean lines, use of space, and the individuality of each unit. The green "bones" and finishing materials were impressive - not to mention the postcard view through everyone's windows. I have a better understanding now how homes that appear to be small in square footage on paper can be planned and built to appear much larger and feel spacious.

A special thanks to Susan, Margaret and Jean for showing us their homes and again to Margaret for patiently answering our many questions." Susan
